Who is Lewis Hall?

(Published on - 12/24/2015 10:50:06 PM)

You’re house hunting in Southern Arizona and the Realtor pulls into a circular driveway to view this amazing Spanish Colonial home.  Or, is it a Spanish Revival with an original burnt adobe exterior?  Really, you're not too sure.  But, you do know that the arches, angles and craftsmanship  must have a significant place in Tucson’s history.

You feel the warmth and charm radiating from this dwelling.   Armed with a smart phone, pen and yellow note pad, you follow your agent to the front door.

Surprise!   Beyond the large double exterior doors is this amazing courtyard!  There’s some detailed iron work and a flowing, three tiered, Mexican fountain.

As you enter the home, you can’t help but admire the placement of the home on the lot, as it takes advantage of its views and natural setting.

Large floor to ceiling windows greet you in the old world foyer.  The home has spacious gathering areas, a huge brick fireplace and boasts hand sewn wood beams from the old Mt. Lemmon sawmill.  You can picture yourself sitting on the overstuffed sofa, with a good book, on a cool desert evening.

Instantly you feel that this unique home had a superior architect.  Who is this incredible design genius?

With these prominent features, there’s a very good chance you’re in an original Lewis Hall.

Mr. Hall, a highly recognized Architect in Southern Arizona, is well known for his works, such as:  Anthony’s in the Foothills and The Tea Room at Tohono Chul Park.   Hall built commissioned custom homes in Catalina Foothills Estates, El Encanto and thoughout Pima County.  In addition, in the 1950's and 1960's, he built some spec homes to experiment with new techniques and styles.

Lewis Hall was a craftsman, a visionary and a vocal proponent of historical buildings in Tucson.  Hall apprenticed with Josias Joesler, who's known for his romantic revival style in residential homes, The Broadway Village and St. Phillip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church.
