Discover Athens, Tennessee: The Friendly City
If you’re looking for a place that combines small-town charm with everyday convenience, Athens, Tennessee might be the perfect fit. Known as the “Friendly City,” Athens is nestled in the heart of McMinn County and offers a lifestyle that feels relaxed, welcoming, and connected. I proudly called Athens home for over 20 years, so I know firsthand just how special this community is.
Whether you’re thinking about buying a home here, relocating to East Tennessee, or just exploring what Athens has to offer, let me take you on a little tour.
Small-Town Living with Big-City Access
Athens sits right off I-75, just about an hour from both Knoxville and Chattanooga. That means you get the quiet pace of small-town life while still being close enough to enjoy the shopping, dining, and opportunities of bigger cities.

Downtown Athens: Heart of the Community
Downtown Athens is full of local shops, restaurants, and community spaces. As the county seat of McMinn County, it has a rich history—Athens even celebrated its 200th birthday in 2019. The McMinn County Living Heritage Museum is worth a visit if you want to see how the town has grown over the years.
Athens is also home to two school systems—Athens City Schools and McMinn County Schools—giving families options when it comes to education.

Parks, Recreation, and Local Favorites
Athens takes pride in its outdoor spaces. From Powers Park and Veterans Park to Heritage Park and the larger Regional Park, there’s always somewhere to get outside, play, or take a walk.
One of the most beloved spots is Mayfield Dairy Farms (where I actually worked while attending college!). It’s a local favorite for ice cream and a fun place to bring the family. And if you’re looking for higher education close to home, Tennessee Wesleyan University—my alma mater—is right here in town.
Entertainment and Relaxation
There’s no shortage of ways to unwind in Athens. Catch a movie at the Cinema Palace, enjoy a nostalgic night at the Midway Drive-In, or spend time at the E.G. Fisher Library. Aviation fans love stopping by the McMinn County Airport, while fitness seekers can head to the YMCA for swimming, walking, and workouts.

A Community That Cares
Athens truly has a neighborly spirit. With healthcare facilities like Starr Regional Medical Center, community pools, and year-round activities, it’s a town that looks after its people.
If you’re thinking about making a move to Athens—or anywhere in East Tennessee—I’d love to help you find the home that fits your lifestyle. From downtown charm to small-town conveniences, Athens has something for everyone.
