What Materials To Choose For A New Kitchen Countertop?

(Published on - 7/31/2026 10:00:12 PM)

The choices are many, but you need to know what wears better and lasts better over the years.  A little research goes a long way.

First - start with how much maintenance you need to put in to maintain the look of your kitchen countertop.

Second, consider the cost of the material you select.

Third, consider the colors and what wears well over the years.  Doing a little homework will save you regrets and costly replacement.

According to Better Homes and Gardens, Diana Viera, the countertop expert and managing partner at ITALKKRAFT in Miami, FL, the countertop material people regret most is marble.

The reasons are many but just to name a few, it stains easily, it can scratch easily, and it can even crack if the scratches are not taken care of.  Everyday use like knife chopping, putting hot pans without proper protection.  Wine spills or dropping acidic foods can stain the marble. It requires constant care and attention to maintain.  Although, marble is ultra-luxurious and it makes for a stunning design feature, it’s also the most high-maintenance countertop material and it’s expensive.

What is a better alternative?

Quartzite countertops are more durable, easy to maintain, and they are as elegant as marble with low maintenance.  Quartzite is also heat resistant and is well suited for a kitchen that gets a lot of use.  Although, quartzite can be more expensive than marble, it’s a better choice for durability and wearability.  In addition, it delivers luxury.
