Selling Real Estate with Family Pets: Tips and Considerations

(Published on - 7/6/2023 6:16:24 PM)

Selling a home can be a stressful and challenging process, especially when you have beloved family pets. Your furry (or not so furry) friends are an integral part of your life, and you want to ensure their well-being and minimize any disruptions during the sale. In this blog, we will discuss some valuable tips and considerations to help you navigate the process of selling real estate while keeping your family pets happy and safe.

Deep Clean Your Home:

Before listing your property, thoroughly clean your home to remove any traces of pet odors, stains, or hair. Vacuum carpets, clean upholstery, and wash bedding to create a fresh and inviting ambiance. Consider professional carpet cleaning services, as they can effectively eliminate stubborn pet odors that may deter potential buyers. It's essential to address these issues to prevent potential buyers from being deterred by lingering smells or visible stains.

Stage with Pets in Mind:
During the staging process, keep in mind that you have pets. Use neutral colors and fabrics that won't showcase pet hair or stains. Choose decorative elements that can be easily removed or replaced during showings. Avoid excessive clutter, especially with pet-related items, as it can make the space appear smaller and distract potential buyers.

Plan for Showings:
When potential buyers visit your home, it's essential to create a welcoming atmosphere for both humans and animals.  If you have the opportunity, it may be best to remove them from the home during showings.  Take them for a car ride, or a walk if that's an option! If not, then ensure that your pets are comfortable during showings by designating a quiet space for them, preferably away from the main traffic areas. This can be a room or a corner with their bedding, toys, and water bowls. Additionally, consider removing any potential hazards or sensitive items that could be damaged by curious pets. Remember to inform your real estate agent about the presence of pets, so they can communicate this to potential buyers in advance.

Highlight Pet-Friendly Features:
If your property has features that are appealing to pet owners, make sure to emphasize them to your Real Estate agent so they can highlight these in the marketing materials. For example, if you have a fenced yard, a pet-friendly community, or nearby parks, mention these in your listing description. Highlighting the pet-friendly aspects of your home can attract buyers who prioritize their pets' needs.

Communicate with Your Real Estate Agent:
Maintain open and honest communication with your real estate agent throughout the selling process. They will want to know how the showing schedule has been working for you AND your pets!

Selling real estate with family pets requires some extra planning and consideration. By creating a pet-friendly environment, staging your home strategically, and effectively managing showings, you can ensure a smoother selling process while prioritizing your pets' well-being. Remember, a well-maintained, pet-friendly home can attract buyers who share your love for animals, making it more likely to find the perfect buyer for both your property and your furry family members.
