Renovating Your Kitchen? These Upgrades Could Be a Waste of Money

(Published on - 8/27/2023 9:40:35 PM)

When you’re renovating a kitchen, there are plenty of updates that will deliver serious ROI, like updating your fixtures, refinishing your cabinets, or adding new flooring. But there are also some renovations that can be a waste of money.

So what, exactly, are those potential money wasters?

recent article from realtor.com outlined the unnecessarily expensive renovations homeowners should avoid when updating their kitchen, including:

  • Expensive backsplashes. Backsplashes can make a major visual impact in a kitchen. But backsplash colors and patterns are a matter of personal preference; while you may love a certain backsplash, when you go to sell your home, your color and/or pattern choice might not be the right fit for potential buyers. That’s why, if you’re going to install a new backsplash, you should go with either a neutral option which will appeal to many buyers, or an inexpensive version which won’t amount to a serious financial cost if you need to change it when you sell the home.

  • High-end appliances. When renovating your kitchen, you want to invest in functional, stylish appliances. But high-end, brand-name appliances are often twice as expensive as their lesser known counterparts, even though the appliances perform the exact same functions. If you’re going to replace your appliances, keep costs low by researching budget-friendly options with solid reviews.

  • Open shelving. Open shelving may look great on social media, but the truth is, this trend is more style than function, and can limit storage space in a kitchen. (Plus, anything you store on an open shelf can — and will — get dusty with time.) Instead of installing open shelving, invest in functional cabinetry that is both stylish and functional.
