The History of Greeneville, Tennessee

A Community Rich in History, Heritage and Appalachian Charm

Nestled among the beautiful mountains and rolling countryside of Northeast Tennessee, Greeneville is a community where history and hometown living come together. Established in 1783, Greeneville is Tennessee’s second-oldest incorporated town and has played an important role in the history and development of the region. (Greene County TN)

The story of Greeneville began during the late 1700s as settlers moved westward from North Carolina and Virginia. Greene County was formed in 1783 from a portion of Washington County and was named in honor of General Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero. Greeneville was established that same year as the county seat. (Greene County TN)

The State of Franklin

One of the most fascinating chapters in Greeneville's history occurred during the 1780s when the area became the center of the short-lived State of Franklin. In 1784, Greeneville was selected as the capital of this proposed new state. The movement eventually faded, but its story remains an important part of Greeneville's unique heritage. (Greene County TN)

Today, reminders of this remarkable period can still be found throughout the community and are part of what makes historic Greeneville so distinctive.

A Town Shaped by Agriculture and Commerce

For generations, agriculture was the foundation of Greene County's economy. The fertile valleys, rolling farmland and abundant water resources helped establish a strong agricultural tradition that continues to influence the area today.

As transportation improved, Greeneville developed into an important marketing center for the surrounding countryside. The arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s opened new markets, and by 1885, Greeneville had become an important center for the sale of burley tobacco. The town eventually became one of the nation's leading burley tobacco markets. (Greene County TN)

That agricultural heritage can still be seen today in Greene County's farms, open fields, historic barns and beautiful rural properties.

Andrew Johnson and Greeneville's Presidential History

Perhaps no individual is more closely associated with Greeneville than Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States. Johnson moved to Greeneville in 1826 as a young tailor. His tailor shop became a gathering place where local residents discussed politics and current events, and his career eventually led him from local government to the Tennessee legislature, the U.S. Congress, the governorship of Tennessee, the U.S. Senate and ultimately the presidency. (Greene County TN)

Following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, Johnson became President of the United States.

Today, visitors can explore the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, including his original tailor shop, early home, homestead and burial site. These historic locations provide a remarkable glimpse into both Greeneville's past and an important chapter in American history. (Tennessee Vacation)

Greeneville During the Civil War

Greeneville and much of East Tennessee had strong Unionist sentiment during the Civil War. The community experienced the conflict firsthand, changing hands several times during the war.

In 1863, Greeneville became winter quarters for Confederate General James Longstreet following the Confederate defeat at Knoxville. In September 1864, Confederate cavalry commander General John Hunt Morgan was killed in Greeneville after Union forces surprised Morgan and his officers. (Greene County TN)

The Civil War's complicated legacy remains visible in Greeneville today. Historic downtown landmarks and courthouse-square monuments reflect the area's divided loyalties and the experiences of local residents during the conflict.

Education and the Birth of Tusculum

Education has also played a significant role in Greene County's history. Greeneville College was established in 1794, while Washington College received its charter in 1795. In 1818, Samuel Doak and his son established what became Tusculum College, helping establish Greene County as an important center of education in the region. (Greene County TN)

Tusculum University, whose roots reach back more than two centuries, remains an important part of the community today.

Historic Downtown Greeneville

Historic downtown Greeneville continues to preserve the character of earlier generations. Beautiful historic homes, churches, brick sidewalks and landmark buildings provide a strong connection to the community's past. The Downtown Greeneville Historic District is recognized for its collection of historic architecture and its connection to some of the most important people and events in the town's history. (Tennessee Vacation)

Among the community's historic attractions are the Greeneville Greene County History Museum, the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site and numerous historic homes and buildings throughout downtown.

Greeneville Today

While Greeneville proudly preserves its history, it is also a thriving modern community. Agriculture remains an important part of the local identity, while manufacturing, healthcare, education, retail, services and other industries contribute to a diversified economy. (Greene County TN)

The community's location offers residents a unique combination of small-town charm, beautiful farmland, mountain scenery and convenient access to the larger Tri-Cities region. Four distinct seasons, outdoor recreation, historic sites and a strong sense of community make Greeneville an appealing place to live, work and call home.
