During the late 19th/early 20th century, the development of the Intracoastal Waterway created spoil islands which provided many families the opportunity to have fish camps in the Summer and a place to waterfowl hunt in the Winter. The NC barrier and spoil islands have helped shape history from the influential writings of Robert Ruark to the watermen lifestyle and coastal culture that the neighboring small towns once encompassed. Now, very few of these islands are privately owned and rarely ever come available to the open market.
