Parcel A Pequaming Rd Price Reduced! Lake Superior Pequaming Bay Waterfront Property For Sale! This 2.7+/- Acre Parcel has approximately 261 Feet of Pequaming Bay frontage! An area filled with early Settler History, Pequaming Bay is part of Lake Superior's larger Keweenaw Bay, in L'Anse Township in north-central Baraga County. Once the site of a Native American village, the name of Pequaming is thought to be derived from bagwa (or pagwa) and additional words translated to become "at the shallow place". Pequaming is Michigan's best example of a tombolo (meaning Almost An Island), a geological term applied to an island type landform that is attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar. The beach shoreline on both the west and east sides of this spit have become beautiful bays, great for recreation! The Native American village was gone by the time the first white settler, Trader Peter Crebassa, arrived in the 1830's. In the late 1870's the Village of Pequaming was founded and a lumber company built a mill here that produced 25-million board feet of lumber and 25-million shingles annually during the 1890's. Over 1, 000 men were employed, 250 of whom worked at the mill. Many workers lived in neat company owned homes in the nearby Village. By 1910 most of the U.P.'s virgin pine was cut and the mill operation declined. About 1920 Henry Ford decided that the Ford Motor Company should control its own sources of raw materials, and began surveying land in the U.P., especially around L'Anse. Ford purchased 400, 000 acres of land in the area including the mill and the town. Ford built railroads, modernized the mill, and remodeled the homes - equipping them with electricity and running water. The sawmill supplied the Rouge Plant in Lower Michigan, with wood for station wagons. The Ford era ended when automobile production reached a standstill during the Great Depression. But at the beginning of WWII the mills were reopened and operated 24-hours a day. The mills closed in 1942 and the lumber camps and village were abandoned. Today many original village buildings remain intact, and are viewed by tourists. Henry Ford's 5, 000 Square Foot, 9-Bedroom, 6-Bath home in Pequaming can be rented for family gatherings. The property being offered for sale faces northward and has a view across the bay of the Hebard-Ford Powerhouse, the Ford Water Tower, and the Historic Ford 'Ol Town Marina and Campground. The parcel is flat, and sits about 20+ feet over the shoreline. The sand bank has a stairway that will bring you to the water's edge. A boat lift is located on the shore. The water of this bay is great for wading, swimming, and boating. A good number of Walleye, Pike, Smallmouth bass, and Perch offer good fishing, and there is good Lake trout fishing in the bay throughout the season. You can hike or cycle from the property along the narrow road shoulder along the Pequaming Road, and enjoy a 7+/- mile trek to the L'Anse Waterfront Park and Village. There is walk-in access to thousands of acres of Corporate CFA and USA Lands nearby for hunting, trapping, and fishing. This area has wonderful outdoor recreation opportunities in every direction! There is year-round access, and power and telephone is available. Contact us for your Private Tour today! Township Land Division Approval will need to be obtained.
