There is no better place in Northern Michigan for boating than in the Cheboygan area – we truly are the Gateway to the Waterways! From Cheboygan you can launch your boat and either set sail into Lake Huron or places beyond. In fact, we have more miles of shoreline than any other county in Michigan.
The City of Cheboygan sits on the shores of Lake Huron, including Duncan Bay - a natural harbor, home of Marina Village on Duncan Bay and home of the Duncan Bay Yacht Club.
You can easily access Lake Huron from launches in Cheboygan. Why not take a day trip to Bois Blanc or Mackinac Island, or even to the Upper Peninsula? Explore the Les Cheneaux Islands or the shores and islands of nearby Ontario.
The Cheboygan area has another incredible asset in its Inland Waterway (or, historically, the Inland Route). It is a nearly 40 mile, one-way trip through the Cheboygan River, Mullett Lake, Indian River, Burt Lake, Crooked River, and Crooked Lake. See quaint communities and waterfowl as you ply the route, pass through two locks, and stop for a meal at an area restaurant right along the water. A lazy day on the Inland Route is good for the soul.
If you need any help finding the right access points around Cheboygan, stop in at the Cheboygan Chamber office and we’ll get you the information you need. Or you can search at the DNR link below.
These waters all around us in Cheboygan are world famous to sailing buffs. Raise your sails here. Drop your centerboard, grab the tiller, and let the winds whisk you away to your dreams.
Mullett Lake is well over 140 feet is some places and it’s the fourth largest lake in Michigan. The Straits of Mackinac is a legendary destination for sailors with keen nautical skills. The history of sailing in this area is a long one. Come on up to The Great Up North and put your sailboat in truly incredible waters.
We have two member yacht clubs here. They provide sailing instruction and races during the summer months and lots of special events.
Kayaking and Canoeing Heaven
Our area is one of the great American destinations for kayak and canoeing enthusiasts. The Cheboygan River beckons, the Indian River calls, the Sturgeon River awaits, and the great waters of the Straits of Mackinac and our marvelous inland lakes challenge and reward.
Every August we celebrate with the Northern Michigan Paddle Battle and World Championship Wanigan Race so you know we take our paddling sports seriously around here. And we have a lot fun doing it!
