Growing up in Waukesha County, here are some highlights of places that have been enjoyed through the years. My fondest memories are racing horses along Hwy 16 or snowmobiling through the fields that are now Bristlecone Pines.
Lapham Peak is where it all started for my husband and I with walks together or separately; and, he asking for me to marry him on top of the tower the after a scavenger hunt through a history of places we had been while dating and picking up family members along the way. That will be a night I will never forget! Of course, we needed to make sure we were married at the park and used Trecker Lodge to celebrate our special day. Honestly, no matter what your hiking experience, this is the place of choice; there are paved, grass, and gravel trails to enjoy throughout the park. A butterfly garden and memorial benches to stop for a breather while enjoying the great outdoors.
A favorite place for the boys when they were younger was Fort Cushing at Cushing Memorial Park. When taking a break with the kids, take a walk downtown Delafield to the local shops or get a bite to eat. Make sure to visit Steven Paul Designs where my husband created my one-of-a-kind wedding ring with birthstones embedded in the base of the ring to symbolize our family. My mom has had numerous rings redesigned and we love going to visit to see their new creations. While traveling down Hwy C, Nashotah Park is a favorite for hikes or even better during the winter months for sledding or cross-country skiing.
We taught the boys how to play disc golf in the heart of Sussex. Lions Daze at Sussex Village Park has also been a family favorite through the years when we are in town. Geocaching was also a family favorite when the boys were younger and know that many families still participate in scavenger hunt activity to explore the outdoors; great activity if you enjoy camping!
Our downtown areas flourish in Waukesha county…
Downtown Pewaukee has been revived since growing up in the area. The lakefront and beach area looks and feels like community since the renovation and transformation. Downtown Oconomowoc offers local shops and places to eat, while seeing views or walking along the waterfront. In the evening, the gateway sculpture lights up with different colors each representing something unique about the community. Downtown Waukesha is always full of activity whether it is kids at the playgrounds, runners along the walkways, or shoppers at the local stores or eateries. Downtown Menomonee Falls has recently gone through renovations and revival too. Summer comes alive with concerts and Beer Garden at the heart of the village. Fiddleheads Coffee Roasters renovated a the historic Koehler-Zahn House downtown and offers a rooftop sitting area.
Your home will become so much more when enjoying the community and all that our surrounding areas offer. My best days are those when striking up a conversation with someone in a store or learning more about a community while walking around in a local downtown area.
