When it comes to exploring Washington County, here are a few places our family has enjoyed while living here over the years.
Our family favorite is taking hikes at Pike Lake State Park with our pups. As life-long learners, there is even an Astronomy Trail to take walking breaks and learn about our solar system on information boards. If you are in West Bend, there is a Sculpture Walk which gives us a chance to enjoy public art. Explore different areas while honing your navigation skills by doing geocaching. There are many fond memories of finding and leaving behind treasures when the boys were younger; we would geocache on weekends or while camping in various state parks all around Wisconsin.
During golf season, you may find us on the golf courses throughout the county. Our course of choice is Kettle Hills Golf Course. One of our sons learned how to golf and worked as a golf cart attendant during his high school years. My father-in-law now leads the junior golf and serves as a course ranger throughout the season; retirement does not slow this man down! You may even see my husband and father-in-law on Thursdays while enjoying time with their golf league. A few other golf courses we have enjoyed through the years: Washington County Golf Course, Hartford Golf Club, West Bend Lakes Golf Club; and we can't forget when the PGA tour was hosted at our own Erin Hills.
Walking around in our downtown areas to shop local businesses and take in the small town atmosphere is always a joy. While you are enjoying the downtown area, visit our local libraries. Jack Russell Memorial Library in Hartford is my favorite because it is next to a scenic pond where benches are available to enjoy the book chosen after taking a walk downtown and maybe picking up an ice cream too. The beauty of our downtown areas is the festive feeling all year round.
While taking a drive down our scenic country roads, here are a few locations you may want to stop and enjoy. If you are interested in cars and history, take time to visit the Wisconsin Automotive Museum in Hartford. While driving down Hwy 83, you can't miss seeing the Holy Hill chapel from afar. If you have time, the grounds make for an enjoyable hike. Richfield is full of local history and offers art events throughout the year. Visit the Richfield Historical Society website for information. Enjoy a visit to the Shalom Wildlife Zoo which offers gravel walking trail and Indian Artifact Museum. During the scenic drives, please be careful and mindful for motorcycles. Back in the day, my parents would take weekend drives through our country roads and enjoy the scenery.
We don't close down during the winter months. I learned how to ski at Little Switzerland and our family has enjoyed winter evenings or weekends on the slopes. You may see our son there when home from college helping in rentals. If it's tubing you enjoy more, visit Sunburst Winter Sports Park. Our family favorite for the holidays is a drive through Enchantment in the Park in West Bend which is sponsored by our local Rotary Clubs.
Your home will become so much more when enjoying the community and all that our surrounding areas offer. Enjoy the little things in life and always smile when seeing others around town. Sometimes it is our smile which perks up another person we have never even met.
