Where the Locals Go: The Appleton Museum of Art

On this week's edition of where the locals go, I'll be talking about the Appleton Museum of Art.

History

Opened in 1987, the Appleton is located in Central Florida and is home to an extraordinary permanent collection of over 18,000 objects, plus an outdoor sculpture walk and garden, and a wide variety of temporary exhibitions and special events throughout the year.

The 81,610 square-foot museum is both classical and contemporary, with clean lines and stately Italian travertine marble. The original building surrounds an idyllic interior courtyard and fountain.

The Appleton is the focal point of the Appleton Cultural Center, a complex east of downtown Ocala on Silver Springs Blvd./State Road 40, which includes the Ocala Civic Theatre, and is one of six College of Central Florida campuses.

The Appleton Museum is open

Tuesday - Saturday: 10 AM - 5 PM

Sunday: 12 - 5 PM

Monday: CLOSED

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youth (6-17), and free for children 5 and under. The museum also offers a variety of discounts for seniors, university students, educators, and more.

The Appleton Museum has 8 permanent exhibits: Florida Artists, Equine, European, Pre-Columbian, Asian, African, Modern and Contemporary, and Maritime. Some of their current sections are paintings from Kristin Herzog, Alison Saar, and the Legacy of Arthur I. Appleton. They have 4 upcoming exhibits, including

A Breeze Through Fertile Gardens: Paintings and Drawings by Andrew M. Grant, Heart of the Horse: Photographs by Juliet van Otteren, Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau, and Garden Party: Botanical Paintings by Susan Martin. The Appleton Museum even occassionally has student exhibits!

Education

The Appleton Museum has many education and studio art programs. Beginning in June, in-person activities will resume while they continue to offer a robust online schedule of workshops and programs for all ages.

This year, the Appleton’s annual Summer Art Camp will be completely virtual and free, featuring eight unique weeks of themed camps, each with five activities and three live Zoom classes with an art instructor. A materials list will be provided in advance of each camp, and activity instructions will be provided just prior to the first day of each camp. Pre-registration required via Eventbrite. Zoom session login details will be sent in your email confirmation. For a Virtual Summer Art Camp PDF brochure, click here.

The Artspace remains closed currently, but will reopen June 1. Also beginning in June, in-person activities will resume, including the Museum & Me Pre-K Program.

Educators can plan field trips to the museum, and there is even a Bus Reimbursment Program for students visiting from schools in Marion County.
