Moms Are The Best Negotiators

I recently attended a meeting of our Real Estate Board members and was chatting with a fellow Realtor® and one thing that stuck with me that they said was, “Mom’s are the best negotiators!”  Of course, I chuckled and then started thinking, man is she right!!!  

That is absolutely what I do from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed.  At home and at work.  I have to admit, though, I far more enjoy work negotiations than those with a 4-year old and a toddler.  And I won’t even get started on the husband and dog negotiations…..

Here’s some great examples of hard negotiations I deal with daily before I even start battling for my clients:

ME - “Sweetie what would you like in your lunch today?”

4-YEAR OLD – “Pasta with cheese and butter.”

ME – “How about we try something new today like a tasty fruit wrap?”  

4-YEAR OLD – “Yah, that sounds delicious.”  

One point for mom.

ME - “Time to get dressed for school…quick quick we don’t want to miss the bus.”

4-YEAR OLD – “I want to wear a dress.” 

ME – “It’s minus 25 outside, you can wear the dress another day.  I’ve got an idea, why don’t you wear this cool top and these nice leggings that match?”

4-YEAR OLD – “Yah that will look beautiful.”

Point two for mom!  WINNING!!

But, when it comes to the toddler, the game changes a little bit.  He is “food driven” like the dog.  If he doesn’t want to do something, all I usually have to say is, “want a snack?”  

No, I’m not 100% this is the appropriate strategy, but - hey - it works and, when you’re a working mom, you do what you gotta do!  But, more importantly, it puts points on the board for mom….  

Mom up 3-0.  

Wait a sec, maybe I should try that on my clients?  I wonder if clients are also “food driven”. 

“I’ll take you for lunch if you sign and accept!”  Ha ha, I’m kidding.  I know clients prefer wine…..

All kidding aside, our market is maintaining a fast and steady pace and, from the forecasts I’m seeing and the conversations in the industry, it seems it’s going to be the same pace moving into 2020.
